Online Dating Sites Scammers Using Stolen IDs

Finding love can be a life long dream. For many, the comfort of having a love one beside them is more than anything that they own, including money. For many scammers, this is a new tactic in which they approach vulnerable individuals and attempt to convince individuals to give them their money.

There is a growing trend of scammers stealing the identities of US Army soldiers from social network sties, and then using their information to set up false profiles in online dating sites. The profiles are then used to scam potential dates out of their money. The soldiers are also becoming victims when their loved ones discover their profiles on these sites and believe that the soldiers are trying to cheat.

This scam is a new twist on a Nigerian classic: The 419 advance fee scam. It turns out that many of these scammers are based outside of the country, and the frequency with which they are using this tactic is increasing at alarming rates. Britain has estimated that nearly $100 million has been lost in these scams involving identity theft. They specifically target single women and are very good at getting people to trust them and working on someone's emotions.
